The Rock (1996)

Genre : Action, Adventure, Thriller

USMC General Francis Xavier Hummel (Ed Harris) has spent most of his career carrying out covert military operations. Over the years, nearly a hundred of his men have been killed or left behind, and they have not received any recognition. He has been protesting the government, for years, to pay benefits to families of war veterans who died during covert military operations.

The death of his wife Barbara Hummel on March 9, 1995 drove him over the edge. General Hummel and his loyal marines seized a stockpile of U.S. Military weapons and stole 15 rockets equipped with the deadly V.X. nerve gas. An ultimate biological weapon, that one single rocket only is enough to take out 70 thousand people.

General Hummel and the Marines then go on a tour of Alcatraz, the prison in San Francisco that famous for the fact that no prisoner had ever successfully escaped. He takes over Alcatraz, along with 81 civilian tourists as hostages. His reason for doing this is simple: he has seen Marines under his command get killed in combat without a military burial or benefits to their families.

General Hummel demands the government to give the fallen Marines recognition and pays 100 million dollars as restitution to families of Marines who died in covert operations. Otherwise, he is threatening to launch 15 rockets carrying the deadly V.X. nerve gas into the San Francisco Bay area.

An elite Navy SEAL team is assembled to penetrate the terrorists' defenses on Alcatraz and neutralize the threat before time runs out. The FBI send their top Bio-chemical warfare expert, Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage), to support the SEAL. Stanley is needed because he knows how to disarm the V.X. bombs, but Stanley needs someone who knows Alcatraz well enough to get them inside.

The best person they could find is former British intelligence agent, John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), who has been in every prison in the U.S. for the past 30 years without a trial because he was accused of stealing the private files of J. Edgar Hoover. John became the only inmate ever broke out from Alcatraz in 1962. Despite his extreme hatred of the FBI, John agrees to help.

When they go in, General Hummel's Marines ambush the entire SEAL team, leaving Stanley and John to work on their own to rescue the hostages and neutralize the bombs. The problem is that Goodspeed is not really a field agent and Mason realize that when he returns, he will be sent back to prison for a long time, and Mason doesn't want to back to prison again.
