
It is Summer 1935. One year before the events of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
It is late night in Hongkong. The legendary Archaeology professor Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. (Harrison Ford) confronts Lao Che, a Chinese gangster leader, in a nightclub. They are trading an artifact from the Ming dynasty emperor. After the trading fail, the gangsters won't let Indy get out of the nightclub alive. However, Indy escapes from the gunfight along with his two friends, a night club singer Wilhelmina "Willie" Scott and a twelve-year-old boy "Short Round".
They sneak up aboard a freight plane and escape from Hongkong – unaware their plane and the two pilots belong to Lao Che. Over the Himalayas, the pilots dump the fuel, and parachuting out of the plane. Indy discovers the plane start to dive and the engines fail. Indy and friends jump out of the plane and they survive a 300-feet free fall.
After crash landing in India, they meet an old Indian shaman who leads them to an Indian small distressed village where people are starving and dying. The villagers believe that evil spirits have taken all their children away after a sacred precious stone was stolen. Indy figures out that the missing stone is one of the Sankara stones, which are supposed to have a great magical power.
Agreeing to help the villagers, Indy and friends start the mission to Pankot Palace, a gigantic palace on the top of the mountain. The palace belongs to a peaceful young Indian prince who assures that no such action occurred from his palace. The Prime Minister Chatter Lal offers them to spend the night in the palace.
However, that evening Indy finds a secret underground cavern that lead to an ancient temple known as the Temple of Doom. The temple once house of the Thuggee, a terrorist cult that he thought was long extinct. The Thuggee’s psychopathic high priest, Mola Ram used to kill his victims by tearing their hearts out alive as sacrifices to Kali - the Thuggee god of death. The Thuggee has kidnapped the children from the village and enslaved them in the underground mine to dig for the magic stones. The Thuggee believe that with the power of all five Sankara stones they can rise once more and rule the world.
